The Hidden Treasure of the Ionian Sea

Lefkada (Λευκάδα in Greek) is a little-known jewel of the Ionian Sea. What makes it unique is its particular location: at first glance, it appears to be part of mainland Greece, but in reality, it is a true island, connected to the coast by a suggestive elevated highway over the sea.

A Surprising Landscape

Covering an area of 356 km², Lefkada offers a fascinating contrast of landscapes—from lush green mountains typical of the Ionian coast to pristine white sandy beaches overlooking crystal-clear waters. The island has preserved its authenticity, avoiding the mass tourism that has transformed other Greek destinations. Given its limited size, this island is a gem that can be explored at leisure and fully enjoyed in just a few days.

About the Beaches

What truly sets Lefkada’s beaches apart is their geological formation. The island is characterized by towering white limestone cliffs that rise majestically from the sea, creating a breathtaking natural spectacle. Over millennia, the natural erosion of these rocks has formed dazzling white sand seabeds which, combined with the incredible water clarity, give the sea colors reminiscent of the Caribbean. This unique geological phenomenon grants Lefkada some of the most stunning beaches in the Mediterranean, where the contrast between the white cliffs, the turquoise sea, and the lush greenery creates landscapes of rare beauty. It is worth noting that many of the island's beaches have areas dedicated to naturism—a cultural aspect to keep in mind when visiting.

Why Visit Lefkada?

As an experienced traveler who has visited more than half of the Greek islands, I can confidently say that Lefkada ranks among the top five most beautiful islands in the Hellenic archipelago. Its uniqueness lies in its magnificent beaches, breathtaking colors, and crystal-clear waters with stunning shades that shift towards white. What makes this island even more special is the authentic energy it radiates, along with the genuine character of its inhabitants, who have preserved their traditions and way of life, resisting globalization—an aspect I find particularly fascinating.

Who Is It For?

It’s important to highlight that Lefkada is not a destination for everyone. If you are looking for a vibrant nightlife and wild entertainment, this island might not be the right choice for you—and that, in my opinion, is one of its greatest strengths. Lefkada stands out as a place for relaxation, attracting a more mature and mindful type of traveler seeking peace and serenity.

While it shares a tourist appeal with other Greek islands, Lefkada maintains a distinct identity that sets it apart from most other destinations in the archipelago. In short, if you are looking for chaos and nightlife, I suggest choosing another location—Lefkada is the perfect place for those who want to disconnect from the daily hustle and immerse themselves in an atmosphere of true tranquility.

How to Get to Lefkada

By Plane

The nearest airport is Aktion Airport (PVK):

  • Distance: About 20 km from Lefkada.
  • It is the most convenient airport for reaching the island, offering both domestic and international flights.
  • It is advisable to book tickets well in advance as they are very limited, and during high season it is extremely difficult to find them at affordable rates.

Transport from the Airport to Lefkada

  • Car Rental
The most convenient option for exploring the area independently.

    • Average cost: €40-70 per day for economy or mid-range cars (e.g., Fiat Panda, Opel Corsa, or similar).
    • For larger or luxury vehicles, prices can go up to €100-130 per day or more.
  • Taxi
A quick but much more expensive option.

    • Estimated fare: €70-100 from the airport to Lefkada.
    • Tip: Book in advance through apps like lefkada.taxaki.com to save money compared to traditional taxis.
  • Bus

    • There are no direct buses from the airport to Lefkada.
    • However, by walking 10-15 minutes outside the airport, you can reach the nearest bus stop.
    • From there, you can take a local bus to Preveza, the closest city to the airport.
    • Public buses within Lefkada are available, but they are infrequent and do not cover the entire island efficiently.

Do You Need a Car to Visit Lefkada?

Renting a vehicle is highly recommended, as public transport is limited. Whether it’s a car, quad, or scooter, having your own transportation will give you the freedom to explore hidden coves, breathtaking viewpoints, and charming inland villages at your own pace.

    Top 10 Beaches of Lefaka

The most spectacular beaches of Lefkada are found along the west coast and in the south of the island, where towering white cliffs plunge into a turquoise sea with unique reflections. Here, you'll find the most iconic bays, such as Porto Katsiki and Egremni, accessible by land or boat.

Further south, beaches like Vasiliki attract windsurfing enthusiasts thanks to the constant winds. Each shoreline has its own character, but the western side offers the most dramatic and untamed landscapes.

    1 Egremni Beach

    The Wild Essence of Lefkada

I love this slice of paradise Egremni Beach is one of the most spectacular and untouched beaches in Lefkada, and the most energetically intense. It stretches for nearly two kilometers beneath towering white cliffs that rise over 150 meters above the sea, creating a truly breathtaking landscape.

    Not a Beach for Everyone

Getting here requires determination: 355 suspended metal steps anchored to the white limestone cliffs lead down to the beach. It’s a descent that tests your endurance, but with every step, you get closer to one of the most stunning coastlines in the Mediterranean.

The effort is rewarded the moment your feet touch the whitish sand, and your gaze is lost in the crystal-clear water, shifting through endless shades of blue.

Before the landslide, Egremni Beach was much deeper, with a larger shoreline that extended further into the sea. After the landslide, the beach was significantly reshaped, and the number of visitors diminished, which has allowed the beach to retain its more authentic charm, free from the crowds that once frequented it.

Here, you won’t find the comforts of organized tourismEgremni has preserved its wild, unspoiled nature. The only touch of modernity is a small seasonal kiosk, very simple and minimal. Be sure to bring water, an umbrella, and everything you need for the day, because once you’re down here, you won’t want to leave until sunset.

The vast expanse of the beach ensures that you can always find your own private paradise, even in high season. The sea, often calm in the morning, can become rougher in the afternoon as the wind picks up, creating a mesmerizing spectacle of waves crashing against the shore.

    2 Milos Beach

A Natural Amphitheater on the Ionian Sea

Nestled between two rocky headlands, Milos Beach is a breathtaking sight at first glance. It is my favorite beach in Lefkada, precisely because its limited accessibility keeps it intimate and authentic, far from mass tourism.

To reach it, you must tackle a challenging trail that takes about 15–20 minutes to walk. The path is narrow, scattered with stones, protruding roots, and bushes, making it unsuitable for everyone—definitely not recommended for people with mobility issues or families with very young children. But it’s precisely this “natural selection” that preserves the magic of the place.

Once you arrive, the beach opens up like a natural amphitheater, where golden sand meets crystal-clear waters that transition from turquoise to deep blue. Fortunately, despite its wild nature, there is a small bar where you can refresh yourself after the walk. For those who prefer to avoid the trail, there’s a more convenient alternative: a water taxi from Agios Nikitas—a practical solution that also offers a pleasant mini-cruise.

    Milos beach natural shadow

What makes Milos truly special is its untouched beauty. No beach clubs or neatly arranged umbrellas here—just the pure essence of an authentic Greek beach. The wind that often sweeps this coast creates ideal conditions for windsurfing, turning the waters into a natural playground for water sports enthusiasts.

I have spent many days in this little paradise, where I would arrive at dawn every morning. I can assure you that experiencing this hidden gem with only the seagulls for company, as the sun rose and gently kissed the surface of the incredibly transparent aquamarine-green water, is absolutely priceless. These are moments of pure magic, forever etched in the soul.

    3 Porto Katsiki Beach

    Porto Katsiki

One of the most spectacular beaches in Lefkada, renowned for its towering white cliffs that plunge into the turquoise sea. You can reach it by car up to the parking lot above, from where about 100 steps lead down to the beach, offering a breathtaking view and a unique experience. Alternatively, you can get there comfortably by boat from Nidri and Vasiliki.

The water, with its characteristic opalescent hue, shifts from blue to white due to the limestone seabed, but the sea can become rough in the afternoon. There is no natural shade unless you reach the very bottom of the beach where you can find some at some point of the day, so bringing an umbrella and plenty of water is advisable. As the most visited beach on the island, it's best to arrive early to enjoy it in greater tranquility.

The broken path - avoid to walk here!

    4 Kathisma

    Where Fun and Beauty Meet

Easily accessible (no stairs!), Kathisma is one of the most lively and well-equipped beaches in Lefkada, where natural beauty blends seamlessly with modern comforts. A vast stretch of white sand extends for over a kilometer, kissed by crystal-clear waters that shift from turquoise to deep blue. Towering white cliffs frame the beach, creating a breathtaking postcard-perfect setting.

Unlike its wilder counterparts, Kathisma offers all the amenities one could wish for: trendy beach bars, neatly arranged sunbeds and umbrellas, beachfront restaurants, and adrenaline-pumping water sports. The music from the beach bars blends harmoniously with the sound of the waves, creating a vibrant yet relaxed atmosphere. If you seek more privacy and tranquility, head to the southern section beyond the rocky area—you'll find a secluded and peaceful stretch of beach.

The beach is easily reachable by car, with ample parking, making it an ideal destination for families and groups. Despite its popularity, its expansive shoreline ensures that everyone can find their perfect spot—whether to enjoy the lively energy of the beach bars or the serenity of the quieter areas.

Sunset here is an unforgettable spectacle, as the sun dips into the Ionian Sea, painting the sky and water with mesmerizing colors while the beach bars prepare for magical summer nights.

The access is easy via an asphalt road, though it has some steep turns.

The beach is a stretch of golden sand mixed with small pebbles, with crystal-clear waters that shift from turquoise to deep blue. Despite its wild nature, in high season, you can find a few beach bars and rent sunbeds and umbrellas. The sea can get rough in the afternoon, making it a favorite spot for surf enthusiasts.

If you're looking for space and authenticity, Gialos Beach is the perfect destination.

    6 Angiofili Beach

    Little Gem of Lefkada

Surrounded by white cliffs and accessible by sea via water taxi or through a dirt path, this small bay offers a tranquil and paradisiacal atmosphere. During the summer months, it can get crowded, so it’s best to arrive early to fully enjoy its beauty.

    7 Megali PIetra Beach

A Hidden Gem Among Giant Rocks

To access this beach, you must pass through Kavalikefta Beach, which features a chalet with a restaurant and bar as well as a convenient parking area. Once past this beach, you’ll find yourself at Megali Petra Beach, a true gem of Lefkada’s western coast, named after the massive rock formations scattered along the shore.

Here, nature reigns supreme, with crystal-clear turquoise waters and a beach of mixed sand and pebbles—perfect for those seeking tranquility and authenticity. Access requires a short but steep descent, which helps keep it less crowded compared to other beaches on the island.

At sunset, the golden light reflecting off the towering rocks and shimmering sea creates a breathtaking scene—one of the most spectacular sights in Lefkada.

    8 Agios Ioannis Beach

    A Windsurfing Paradise in Lefkada

Located just a few kilometers from Lefkada Town, Agios Ioannis Beach is a long stretch of golden sand and pebbles, lapped by crystal-clear waters. This beach is famous for its constant winds, making it one of the top spots for windsurfing and kitesurfing.

Along the coast, you'll find ancient windmills, adding a picturesque touch to the landscape. Despite its proximity to the town, it maintains a peaceful atmosphere, perfect for those seeking relaxation without being too far from essential services. The sunset here is breathtaking, as the sun dips into the Ionian Sea, painting the sky with spectacular colors.

    9 Mikros Gialos

    Relax and Crystal-Clear Waters

Located in Rouda Bay, Mikros Gialos is one of the most charming and peaceful beaches in Lefkada. I personally loved it because it is sheltered from the wind, offering calm, crystal-clear waters, perfect for swimming and snorkeling.

The beach consists of small and large white pebbles, which contrast beautifully with the turquoise shades of the sea. With restaurants, bars, and sunbeds available, it's an ideal spot for a day of pure relaxation without giving up comfort. Additionally, right behind the beach, there is a convenient free parking area, with some shade provided by olive trees, making access even easier. If you're not a fan of sand, this beach is perfect for you!

    10 Vasiliki

    The Windsurfers' Paradise in Lefkada

Located in the southern part of the island, Vasiliki is a beach famous for its consistent winds, making it an ideal destination for windsurfing and water sports.

The bay, surrounded by green hills, offers both organized areas and quieter spots with shallow, crystal-clear waters, perfect even for families.

    Conclusions and Recommendations

Lefkada is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating destinations in Greece, an island that amazes with its breathtaking beaches and unique energy. Although located in the Ionian Sea, it exudes an atmosphere reminiscent of the Cyclades, blending tranquility with wild beauty.

This is not a destination for everyone: mass tourism has yet to take over, and it probably never will. Lefkada appeals to conscious travelers and nature lovers, those who seek peace, silence, and authenticity.

Services are efficient, and accommodations range from simple guesthouses to more exclusive stays. For those looking for a nature-immersed experience, the small hillside villages provide a perfect retreat. Additionally, Lefkada boasts high-quality local products, such as olive oil, honey, fig, and grape jam, all reflecting the island’s rich and generous land.

The only real challenge? Accessing some of the island’s beaches. Limited parking, long staircases, and walking trails are often required to reach these paradise-like spots. But in the end, the most beautiful things in life always require some effort.

    When to Visit Lefkada?

For a more relaxed experience, June and September are the best months to visit. June is perfect if the weather is good, while September is excellent, offering warm sea temperatures and a peaceful atmosphere. July and August, on the other hand, bring more crowds and a bit of chaos, making them less ideal for those seeking serenity.

Lefkada is an island that leaves a lasting impression, perfect for those who love the sea, nature, and authentic travel experiences. And this island captured my heart!
